UK Sea Bass Fishing: When, Where, and What to Use

Why sea bass are worth the effort

British sea bass season runs roughly May to October, peaking in July and August. They fight harder than any inshore fish their size, take lures aggressively, and turn up in surprisingly accessible spots — pier ends, estuary mouths, surf beaches, rocky outcrops.

The 5 best places to target UK sea bass

  1. Cornish surf beaches: Watergate Bay, Perranporth, Sennen Cove. Best on a flood tide after a south-westerly blow.
  2. Solent and South Coast: Hayling Island, Lymington, Selsey Bill. Estuary mouths produce well on dropping tides.
  3. Welsh coast: Pembrokeshire (Tenby, Manorbier), Anglesey rock marks. Boat-accessible too.
  4. East Anglia: Felixstowe and Walton-on-the-Naze piers. Best at first light.
  5. Scottish west coast: A growing fishery — limited but stocks expanding northward.

Best lure setups for UK bass

Surface lures (low light, calm water)

Surface poppers and walk-the-dog stickbaits in 9–14cm. The bait fish your bass eat (sandeel, sprat) live near the surface in calm conditions. Top-water takes are explosive.

Soft plastics (most conditions)

Paddle-tail soft baits in 12–16cm on weighted hooks (15–25g). Cast, twitch, pause. The pause is when bass take. Our Predator Lure Bundle includes soft baits that work for bass.

Metal lures (windy, distance)

Slim metal lures or jigs (20–40g). Cast into wind, retrieve fast and erratic. Good for surf beaches and rough conditions.

Rod and reel setup

  • Rod: 9–10ft spinning rod, 10–40g casting weight. Our Estuary 9ft is purpose-built for this.
  • Reel: 3000–4000 size sealed reel — our Coastal Pro 4000 handles salt spray and big bass.
  • Mainline: 15–20lb braid for distance and feel, leader of 15lb fluorocarbon.
  • Polarised glasses: Essential for spotting fish in shallow surf — our amber polarised pair floats if dropped.

Tide timing matters more than time of day

Bass move with tides, not clocks. The best windows:

  • Flood tide on rising water: Bass push baitfish toward shore. 2 hours before peak high.
  • Ebb tide drop: Bass position in channels and gulleys. First 2 hours of falling tide.
  • Slack water: Generally poor — use the time to move marks.

Conservation reminder

UK bass have minimum landing sizes (42cm currently). Bag limits apply to recreational anglers. Always check the latest DEFRA regulations before keeping any fish. We strongly recommend catch-and-release for bass over 60cm — they're breeding stock.

Tight lines

Sea bass fishing rewards patience and reading water. A few sessions in, you'll start to recognise the textures — broken surface where baitfish are pushed up, surface boils where bass are working, gulleys where fish position on the tide.

Pair the right kit with the right tide, and you'll catch.
